BLEED ROOM Bleeds are used in printing when the color needs to extend off of the paper (color edge-to-edge). A standard bleed room is 0.125". CROP MARKS Crop marks are lines generated by programs to indicate where the artwork needs to be cut. **Large Format printing such as signs, and most business card files will not require crop marks.
SAFETY MARGINS Any content you do not want to risk being cut off needs to be kept within this area. a Standard Safety margin is 0.125" inward from the finish edge. *For Large Format printing signage printed on PVC, Corrugated material, Foamcore, or aluminum: we prefer a 0.375-0.5" Safety Margin.
Here are some quick tutorial references for different programs. If you need more information or an easier video, please search for another tutuorial through Google or Youtube- there's a ton of information out there! Adobe Illustrator | Adobe InDesign | Adobe Photoshop | Publisher
If you intend on sending us your own design to be printed, to avoid any graphic design set up fees you will need to send us PRINT READY ARTWORK. This means that the file you send us does not require any work and we can send it into production immediately. Artwork must be to the correct finish-size dimensions and include bleed room / crop marks if applicable, in PDF form. In other words: you cannot send us a file that is 8.5"x11" when you need it printed as a 24"x18" sign. PRINT READY ARTWORK means that the file you send us is EXACTLY what will be printed. You will not receive a proof before we start production because we are printing the file you send us.
COLORS- Color format should ALWAYS be done in CMYK when your artwork is intended for printing. CMYK stands for the color toners used in printing. If you create your artwork using RGB color-space, please note that some colors will print differently than what they appear on your screen. For example: it is not possible to print neon colors. If you do not know how to change the color format you are working in, that is okay- just be aware that some colors may not print the way they appear on screen.
DOUBLE SIDED ARTWORK- For us to print something double sided, we need the artwork in 2 separate pages/files. Please do not send artwork that is intended to be double sided '2up' or side-by-side. We cannot print this way.
EXAMPLE: (1st photo): Putting your desired artwork onto an 8.5"x11" page, when your desired size is 5"x7"...This is INCORRECT. (2nd photo): This is the CORRECT way to send a 5"x7" flyer, with color edge to edge **see bleed room accompanied by crop marks**
UNDERSTANDING FILE FORMATS "WORKING" FILES | File formats of the program in which the design was created in are referred to as 'working' files, or 'native' files. This includes .ai, .psd, .indd, .pub. If you ever need to send us a working file, please be sure to PACKAGE and/or embed all linked files and images as they will not translate otherwise.
PDF (Portable Document Format) | This is the best way to send us files. When saving as a PDF from your native program, it provides the highest quality without flattening and compressing all of the artwork. Some PDFs we are able to manipulate text and content.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) | PNG formats is the next highest quality file. PNG's preserve colors in artworks better than JPG formats. They do compress and flatten the artwork into a single layer image, which makes the file size significantly smaller, and this is the only file format that gives you a 'transparent background' option.
JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) | Contrary to common consensus, JPG, or JPEGs offer the lowest quality among all of the formats. It compresses and flattens the artwork like a PNG, but also creates a great loss in quality and often does not keep colors consistent with the original work, which enables JPGs to create the smallest file size possible.
Q: What materials are printed by the sheet (48"x96") and why? A: Corrugated (yard sign material), Aluminum, PVC, Foamcore, and JBOND are all printed by the sheet. This is how the material comes and avoids any waste... So if you need 7 yard signs (24"x18"), they come in sheets of 10. You can choose to only get 7 yard signs, but it will cost the same as getting the full 10.
Q: When printing Large Format by the sheet, does it have to be all the same artwork for each sign? A: No. Each sign can have different artwork! **Please note the smallest we can make a sign is 6"x6".
Q: When printing Large Format, Can I order different sizes to fill the sheet? A: Yes! We offer a 'custom cut' option so you can get several different sized signs to a sheet.
Q: Can you cut signs out into specific shapes? A: Yes! We call this 'contour cut'. Contour cut signs cost an additional $30, and will require some graphic design time for setting up the file to make your custom cut sign!
